Self Employed
Self employed is nothing more than creating an opportunity to work for yourself. There are many advantages and creative freedoms that go into this way to make a living. For one you get to make all the decisions without any type of approval. You are also in control of your own destiny. There are no guaranteed paychecks for putting in your valuable time. If you expect to get paid for every minute you work then self-employment is not for you.
From a personal standpoint I have enjoyed self employment since 1997. I did have a short 3 year break during which I was an employee and worked at four different jobs. Once you have been a self employed person it is very difficult to go back into the public work sector. It does have some advantages and you no longer have to worry about paying overhead expenses but your efforts now only equal a hourly salary or commission. When given the choice of being in charge and paying all the bills involved in running a business or to just be an employee, I would personally take the responsibility, hours and stress of being in charge. An entrepreneur really does not have much of a choice if he or she wants to be happy and fulfilled.
Who do you work for really when your self employed?
For over a decade I thought that I worked for myself but that was the furthest thing from the truth. All that I was doing was depositing money into the company check book and then paying out checks to everything imaginable. I call it passing out money and everyone has their hand out!
Now hear me out on this. Some people might argue that debt service is just the price of doing business. I say the price is just too high!
Where does the money come from when you self-employed? It comes from sales that you make. Okay then if that is the case the overhead expenses come directly from your profits. Think about it for a minute. It’s a never ending trap.
- You do all the work to create the profit.
- You pay all the overhead and share the profit.
- You get to keep what is left over.
- You take all the risk and your venders gladly accept your profits.
So when your self employed who do you work for is everyone including yourself.
That is the reality of self-employment. I lease a commercial building and when you operate a company out of a store front there is no easy way out of having high overhead. Your going to have to bite the bullet and push tremendous volume.
The best way in today’s times to have a great chance of success for the self employed entrepreneur is to eliminate the brick and mortar business and run your company from home. By doing this you just eliminated most of the profit sharing and expenses. Not every company can be operated from home but for me there is too much madness to the method and I have chosen to be a self employed entrepreneur from any place that has an internet connection.
